“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One.  Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal.  When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities.  Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy.  Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent – even in the mind.  For those with original thoughts they invented Room 101…
Nineteen Eighty-Four is George Orwell’s terrifying vision of a totalitarian future in which everything and everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime.

                                                                   Review:

Imagine a world where everything is controlled.  And I'm not just talking the Nazi or Soviet kind of control.  I'm talking control of EVERYTHING.  Media, books, language, actions, thoughts, history – what people know and feel.  It's terrifying because it’s happened before to some extent.  It could happen again...  And I guess it would start small and get bigger and bigger until...  Bam.  Hello, Big Brother...
Now don't forget:
"Big Brother Is Watching You..."
All the time.  Everywhere.  No matter why you are doing.
This is the world Winston Smith lives in.  This totalitarian state where every single thing is monitored and recorded - even thoughts.  Where history and memories can be rewritten to fit with the ideals of the Ingsoc - the English Socialism Party.
Free thinking is not acceptable – not ever.  It is the worst crime you can commit.
And yet this is what Winston is doing – thinking his own thoughts.  And then he falls in love with Julia.
Even with spies everywhere, they find themselves drawn towards rebellion, towards conspiracy.
Bu nothing gets past Big Brother.
Can Winston hold onto his love and freethinking through the tortures the Ministry of Love inflict on him?
Through Room 101, where your worst nightmares come to life...?
And never forget:
“WAR IS PEACE
'FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
'IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.”
When I was younger, adults would say things like: "oh, it's like Big Brother is watching you" or "well, that would be in my Room 101..."  As a child, I didn't get it.  It wasn't until the start of my AS Level English Lit that I finally understood it all.  Sure, I'd heard of 1984, but I didn't realise that it was the book about Big Brother.  So when my English teacher recommended reading it as an additional text, I was instantly intrigued.  1984 is seen as a literary classic and after reading it, I most certainly know why.  It's mind-blowingly amazing and so very scary it's untrue.  I can't recommend it enough!
Now, dystopias are always scary.  There's always the whole 'what if?' side of them, the feeling of foreboding you can't quite shake.  1984 is literally the king of all dystopias.  It is scary as hell, probably because every single thing about it felt really like it could all happen tomorrow.  Like a Big Brother is just round the corner.  Or is here already, for all we know…  Orwell has captured everything everyone fears most and turns it into a scary-as-hell story and world that is so real you could almost touch it, taste it, feel it.
And I know characters aren't the big point of this book – being scared out of your mind might be, though – but I did really like Winston: he was a refreshing change in a world that pretty much lacked morals and free thinking.  But what this book shows perfectly is that even the strongest character, even the ones with hatred and love and resolve inside, must struggle with everything they have to resist or fight back against the psychological control of a totalitarian dystopian world – and that not all will be successful…
Speaking of, this dystopian world is the scariest I've come across.  There were no laws, but if you did something they didn't like, you could be killed or sent to work camps.  And someone was always watching you through various kinds of technology.  And the children - God.  They were terrifying.  Did you know there was this kid in Nazi Germany who snitched on his own patents and was held up as a hero?  Well, all the kids in 1984 were always listening, ready to turn their parents into Big Brother for some little treachery or another.  Patents were scared of their own kids.  Get why I was scared to death?!  And the idea of Newspeak, the language that gets smaller over time, fascinated and horrified me.  We live in a world where we can speak our minds and where we have so, so many words to choose from.  But if all the dangerous, revolutionary words were taken out of our vocabulary, if we were restricted to certain words, how can we think for ourselves?  How can we fight back when there aren't the words to do so?  It's terrifying and intriguing all in one.  Pure, terrifying genius.
On a negative note, we know Winston can remember all the past – the bits before they were written from history and the people who disappeared, but I wasn't sure about everyone else - did they just know it all and keep quiet out of fear?  Or did it all somehow get written out of their heads as the papers were rewritten?  And if so, how?  Damn these questions – they bugged me for ages.  Still bug me, actually...
But Orwell's writing was obviously amazing.  The writing was beautiful and haunting, if a little heavy at times.  Nonetheless, I could see everything so, so clearly in my head.  And the plot was so very gripping its untrue.  It was intense, suspenseful – the kind of plot where you could feel all that suspense building and building and building, waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.  It was intense and terrifying.  And oh so addictive.
Some books are called classics even when they don't seem like them.  1984was most definitely worthy of the title.  It was psychologically terrifying, mentally challenging, totally and completely beyond words.  1984 was an amazing, powerful book that left me shaken up and reeling.  Classics are classics for a reason, my teacher told me when I mentioned how brilliant it was.  And in the case of 1984, it's a classic for a million and more reasons.  It is most definitely a book everyone must read, a book I can't recommend enough.

Old Gods never die…
Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.
Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.
These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.
Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.
Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their las

But onto the blog tour...  Sarah has whipped up an awsome playlist for The Moon and More - enjoy!  :D

But before you enjoy, remember these super important words:

The Moon and More Playlist

1. “Emaline,” Ben Folds Five. When I start having ideas for a book, the name of the narrator comes first. Sometimes, it’s instantly perfect, but others I have to figure out spelling and how I think it would be pronounced. I wasn’t sure how I wanted to spell Emaline’s name until I found this song by Ben Folds Five. And I just knew.

2. “Free Girl Now,” Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. A lot of this book is about breaking free of expectations and other things that might limit what you can, and do, end up accomplishing in this life. Plus this is a great kiss off song, and you can never have enough of those.

3. “Walk,” Foo Fighters.  Another great song about starting over and making changes. Plus no one rocks like the Foo Fighters.

4. “Shake It Out,” Florence + The Machine. I started writing The Moon and More in the winter of 2011, then had to set it aside to go on tour to promote What Happened to Goodbye. Traveling and meeting my readers is always so fun, but it’s hard to be away from my family, and there were certain times I was just exhausted and homesick. This song was my therapy for MONTHS when those feelings hit, and I still put it on when I need to remember “it’s always darkest before the dawn.” It always does the trick.

5. “The Church of Everybody Else,” Ben Lee. I love all things Ben Lee, but the title of this song is what really got me. Like Emaline, I’ve spent too much time worrying about what other people think of me and my choices, but it’s also scary to decide not to worry about other people’s opinions, because then no one is accountable but you. It’s about a balance between the two, and like Emaline, I’m still trying to find it.

6. “Leaving New York,”  R.E.M.  A great song about coming to realizations about what a person can do for you, as well as finally getting the things they just won’t be capable of, no matter how much you wish things were different.

7. “Daughter,” Loudon Wainwright III. Emaline talks a lot in this book about the difference, in her mind, between her father and her dad. This song sums up parenthood to me, especially that sense of wonder I still feel at times about my own little girl: “That’s my daughter in the water/Who’d have ever thought her?”

8. “Silver, Blue & Gold,” Bad Company. I listened to so much classic rock when I was in high school: it was the soundtrack to my entire experience. I was driving one day and this song came on. I hadn’t heard it in years, and it just brought back SO much, especially my senior year, when I went through a really brutal breakup (read: I got dumped). My heart was just broken and hearing this song after all those years---“Don’t forsake me, cause I love you”---brought back all that pain in one big wave. I was dealing with some sad stuff in Emaline’s story as well, and it just made me get it that much more. Music has that kind of power. Thank goodness.

9. “Dreaming,” Blondie. The chorus says it all: “Dreaming is free.” Emaline’s limited by a lot of things in this story---money, family, people who aren’t who she wishes they could be---but in the end, I think she still ends up in a good place. You can’t stop hoping and wishing and just thinking things will and can happen. What’s the harm in it? After all, it doesn’t cost anything.

Synopsis From Goodreads:
There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys—but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends…and he’s gone.
They call it the Heist.

The Heist itself. And what lies beyond the Wall that surrounds Claysoot–a structure that no one can cross and survive.
Climbing the Wall is suicide, but what comes after the Heist could be worse. Should he sit back and wait to be taken–or risk everything on the hope of the other side?

Half Lives Blog Tour: Sara Grant's Bunker Books

It's a huge pleasure to have the amazing Sara Grant here today!  Welcome back, Sara!!  Anyway, she's here to kick off the blog tour for her AWESOME new book Half Lives.  Squee!  I really recommend this book! :D
Ok, I'll hand over to Sara now...

Bunker Books

Think Desert Island Discs without the sand and sun – and paper versus vinyl.

In my new teen novel Half Lives, teenage Icie escapes to a top-secret mountain bunker – her only hope of surviving after terrorists release a deadly and potentially world ending virus. Hundreds of years later, 18-year-old Beckett leads a cult that worships a sacred mountain. But Beckett and his beliefs are under attack. Icie and Beckett must fight to survive. They are separated by time but connected by a dangerous secret that both must protect at any cost.

While writing Half Lives, I often wondered if I, like Icie, had minutes to pack and escape what would I take with me. My first challenge would be that I’m a planner. I don’t get out of bed without a to-do list. When I pack for a holiday, I typically create a list and then lay out the items I want to pack a few days in advance. The thought of not having time to plan and think and strategize – well, my character would probably be the first to perish in a disaster film.

So when I was asked to blog about what books I’d take with me to a thankfully fictional underground bunker, I was pleased I had time to plan. I have about a hundred books in my ‘to-read’ pile so the idea of having time to sit and read, sounds lovely. Yeah, not so much if the world is ending outside my bunker…

When compiling my list, I had four overall strategies: 1) I wanted books that could take my mind off what could be happening outside the bunker, 2) Books that I could read again and again, 3) Big books that would take me a while to read and ponder, and 4) Books that would help me remember what I’d left behind.

Anyway…here are the books, I’d stuff in my backpack, cart across country, and bury in a bunker with me.

To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. It’s one of the most beloved books of all time. I love everything about it. And it plays a significant role in Half Lives.

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris and Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. I picked these books because they make me laugh. I listened to this Sedaris collection as an audiobook and I frequently burst out laughing. (Which got me loads of strange looks, especially while riding the Tube.) And I loved Silverstein’s poetry when I was a child. It’s a slice of my childhood but could also be my go-to book when times got tough.

The complete collection of Agatha Christie. I love mysteries. There’s something cosy and comforting about settling in with an Agatha Christie story. Murder on the Orient Express. And Then There Were None. Murder is Easy. I know most of these stories already but am willing to read the again and again.

In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. It’s the longest book ever written. I’m thinking bang for my buck here. It would take me a long time to read all seven volumes and more than 4,000 pages.

The Oxford Book of American Short Storiesedited by Joyce Carol Oates. Again, I’ve tried to consider how I might preserve what I love most about reading in my cloistered environment. I could get a taste of multiple genres, but also I’d be able to read them even once my sanity and attention span diminished from lack of sun, nutrients and humanity.

I’d also take a photo album stuffed with pictures of my family, friends and favourite things. And I’d take a notebook and lots of pens and pencils. A writer’s got to write after all – especially if it is the end of the world.

This is probably more than I could carry in my backpack. And it would be just like me to perish on the road side because I’d packed too many books. My husband often asks if I really need six books for a week’s holiday. My answer is always, ‘um, YES!’ (This is where a Kindle comes in handy.) But I would take the proper printed books with me to the bunker.

I hope I never, ever have to make a quick escape, but if I do, I have my reading list all ready!

The Darkling cupped my cheek with his hand, and when he spoke, his voice was almost tender. 'This is just the beginning,' he whispered.
Darkness never dies.
Alina thought she could run from her past and escape her destiny. She can't.
Mal hoped he'd done enough to protect the girl he loved. He hadn't.
The Darkling, more powerful than before, is hungry for revenge. He needs Alina.
Soon Alina must choose between her country, her power, and the man she loves - or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.
Glorious. Epic. Irresistible. Romance. The amazing sequel to Shadow and Bone by New York Times Bestselling Author, Leigh Bardugo.

                                                                   Review:

"What do you want?"
‘Of course, I already knew.  He wanted everything - Ravka, the world, the power of the Fold.  His answer didn't matter… I wasn't going to let him take me again…'
Alina and Mal are on the run from the Darkling and his Grisha Army.  Why?  Well, just this little thing where the Darkling wants to use Alina's powers to destroy all his enemies – and a few thousand – or more – innocent passers-by…
Also, to be safe – to be together – they have to be as far from the Darkling as humanely possible.  Which is easier said than done when you're dealing with a crazy-strong, just-plain-psycho Grisha.  And he almost has control of Alina again...
Until pirate – sorry, privateer – Sturmhold whisks them away.  He is bold, smart and dangerous – and all too easily bought.  He is hiding a huge secret – and has a future all planned out.  One that involves Alina...  Can they trust him to keep them safe – to do the right thing and help them stop the Darkling?
On top of this, Alina is now Sankta Alina, Saint Alina, the one and only Sun Summoner, the only one who can burn away the evil forces controlled by the Darkling.  The only one who can stop the spread of the Fold – the shadowy land created by the Darkling that is infested with once-human monsters...
Can Alina become the Saint everyone needs her to be?  Can she fight against the darkness that threatens to overwhelm her and her whole country?
And even if she succeeds, what will be the price...?
American Cover
Oh how long and desperately I have waited for Siege and Storm!  And finally, finally, it landed upon my doorstep.  I instantly began reading.  In so many series – especially YA ones – the second book is a huge let down.  Siege and Storm?  A total exception.  It was a squillion times better than Shadow and Bone.  I didn't think it was possible to love this series, this world, these characters and this author any more than I did.  But dear God I do!  I think my heart could just explodefrom all my love!  Literally from the word go, there was action.  I love action from the word go.  I find nothing holds one's attention better than a few good fights a few pages in.  Wait, what does that say about me?  Nothing good, right...?
Moving swiftly onto Bardugo's amazing characters.  I obviously loved seeing my favourites – namely Alina, Mal and the Darkling – again: I really do love them!  And I loved seeing so many of the minor characters again.  But what I loved the most was all the new characters.  Oh I loved them so much!  But I'm getting ahead of myself.  Let's start with Alina...
All I can say is: go Alina!  Her power: kickass.  Her sense of humour: kickass.  Her wit and snark and fight: kickass.  Her... Ok, you get the picture.  She's an awesome heroine, so funny and strong and stubborn and witty and she just kills me.  Though I've got to admit: I wasn't overly keen about some of her character-changes.  She seems more... greedy.  I know: for the greater good or whatever, but still.  Then again, maybe it was those freaky things'fault...
Mal... Oh how I love Mal.  He's so sweet and so strong and loyal.  But at times I felt like he was doing things all wrong: if he wanted Alina to trust him, to tell him what was wrong, then why did he storm off?  Why didn't he just stay and talk it out?  It broke my heart, seeing him hurting like that, but why couldn't he just accept?!
I loved their friendship in Shadow and Bone.  And there were many times in Storm and Siege where that bond just made me grin!   It's the kind of bond you don't come across often – the kind of bond that only comes from a long friendship.  That's why all the bumps, mountains, swamps and deserts made me want to curl up and cry.  Even so, I'm almost ninety percent sure I'm Team Malina.  It changes.  I'm fickle like that.  But look at one of the cute, funny bits which were worth my tears:
"Where were you?" he asked.  "I was getting worried."
"I was waylaid by a gang of angry bears," I murmured into his shoulder.
"You got lost again?"
"I don't know where you get these ideas."
Anyway, speaking of my fickleness: The Darkling... Damn, I don't know what it is about that guy but I can't stop falling for him!  I mean, he's evil.  I know this – honest.  But he’s just... intriguing.  I can't figure him out – no matter how hard I try.  And nor can I stop this obsession I have for him.  As I said in my review of Shadow and Bone, he has a pull – a magnetism– that just captures me.  And I still kind of love him.  Idon't know why... It's complicated, ok?
German Siege and Storm Cover
I must say I wasn't overly happy about many of the character and relationship changes.  In fact, some of them completely broke my heart.  But the new cast made up for that.  And damnif I don't have a new favourite guy in this book.  Captain Sturmhond, come on down and enter my list of Book Boyfriends.  He has the charm, wit and humour of Adrian Ivashkov, the sarcastic snark of Jace Wayland, the hot-pirate-ness of the Captain Jack Sparrow and the dangerous edge of Dimitri Belikov all put together.  He had Darkling-level charisma, just without the guilty, terrifying edge. Plus, he just killedme!  I am now one-hundred percent Team Sturmhond.  I adore him.  And I totally didn't see his secret coming!  I loved the twins Tamar and Tolya too – they were so brilliant and I can't wait to see more of them!
Saints, do I love this world.  It is, quite frankly, the coolest world ever and gets even cooler with every single page you read.  There’s just so much magic!  And then there's the all the sciencey stuff you normally never get in your run-of-the-mill fantasies.  We have pistols, automatic rifles (machine guns?  I suck at weaponry), cannons, flying boats and the Small Sciences – AKA, Grisha's magic.  God, I wanna move to this world and be a Grisha.  Ooh, and be a member of Sturmhold's crew!  Yeah, that would be awesome...
And I adore the writing – it's so lyrical, so beautiful, yet so modern and witty and funny.  I love this blend of classic fairytale and modern day – it's yet anotherthing I love about this series!  And it always seems to leave me wanting more!  And the plot was freaking kickbutt too.  It was just nonstop action, nonstop thrills, nonstop suspense and nonstop excitement.  I gobbled it up, falling harder in love each time.  And then having my heart totally broken.  Like, numerous times...  But even I didn't see ninety-nine percent of the twists coming – and I pride myself on being able to solve mysteries.  I always guess the killer before the CSI team.  But, god, this book may be three-hundred-odd pages long, but I could just read it all in one sitting!  You know, if I didn't need things like sleep and food and stuff...  And if Shadow and Bone and Siege and Storm weren’t so freaking awesome, I’d recommend not reading this series 'til all three are out.  Because the cliffhanger?  Killer!  I mean, I swear that Leigh is either trying to drive me insane or make me burst out sobbing!  I need the next book but I know it isn't coming out for like another year!  Noo!
I wrote a piece here gushing about why the Grisha series is so different and so special.  There are many small reasons that all come together to create the awesomeness.  But there are also many more that I can't even explain.  Maybe it is different because it is just magic.  It has the most exquisitely constructed world, the best-written characters, the most amazing writing and storyline.  And it always always always leaves me desperate for more.  It always leaves me aching, foaming at the mouth, for more: right now.  And that, perhaps, is why it is so special.  It is magic.  It is beautiful.  It is perfect.
Well, except for that cliffhanger.  How am I meant to make it a whole year with that hanging over my head?!
Well, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go have a nervous breakdown.  Read the Grishaseries- you won't regret it!  You know.  Mostly...

Top Ten Tuesday (#2)

Hello, lovely followers! I've decided to join in with all the fun of Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the awesome The Broke and the Bookish. It just looks like so much fun! :D
Anyways, this is this week's topic: Intimidating Books!  Ooh!  In no particular order (because I just can't be bothered to order them...) here are my...

Top Ten Most Intimidating Books

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
In the orginal French.  Over nine hundred and sixty pages.  In French.   French.  I'm going to read it for my French course, in theory...  I mean, I'm good.  But I'm not sure I'm quite that good yet...  I'll stick to my nice Les Nuits des Enfants Rois and Jules Verne and whatnot.  They aren't quite as long...
Divergentby Veronica Roth
I know - I suck.  I haven't read this yet.  And that's useless.  But I'm so scared that I'll read it and... will be disappointed.  Because my expectations are so freaking high that I can barely see them...
The Fault in Our Starsby John Green
I have read this book.  And I love it.  Love it.  But I was terrified to read it.  Seriously terrified.  Partly because I was so excited and had such high expectations.  And partly because the other 'cancer' book I'd read was Before I Die, one of my favourite books ever and a book I love almost more than life itself.  But John Green, as expected, more than exceeded my expectations.  Don't believe me?  Check out my rambly review. :D

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Again, same reasons as TFIOS.  And also I saw the movie.  Made me cry so much I couldn't see.  Literally broke me.  And then my mum and aunt ruined the book ending (which is different from the movie ending).  And now I'm just so scared because I know that it's going to break me even more because emotions in books are always a million times worse!
Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Jennifer is my goddess.  Like, literally.  I worship her.  She is brilliant.  And her Lux series is literally my favourite series in the history of ever.  And so while I am absolutely freaking desperate to read Covenant, I am also absolutely freaking terrified that I won't love it as much.  Or, perhaps even worse, that I'll love it more and Daemon won't be my favourite book boyfriend...
My mind is weird.
Alex Cross Series by James Patterson
I read a couple of this series when I was like ten or eleven.  The first was ok.  The second... biggest damn mistake of my life!  And now, even though that was some years ago now, I'm still scared to read his adult books.

Requiemby Lauren Oliver
I freaking love this series.  But I'm terrified.  I don't want the series to end.  And I'm terrified about the ending.  And I hear some bad things about said ending...  Mmmm....  :(
House of Night Series by P.C. and Kristin Cast
Don't get me wrong: I love this series.  Like seriously, love it  to bits.  But... I don't know.  I'm scared that with so many books, it's going to end not being as good as it was when it started.... Did that make sense?  The same goes for Patterson's Maximum Ride.  The first few were great.  But then reviews seem to suggest it goes downhill....  I'm a bit scared to carry on reading, that I won't love the two series as much if I do.
Perfect Chemistry by Simone Ekeles
I know.  I suck.  But now I'm so scared!  Everyone tells me it's awesome.  And I'm scared, ok!  I'm scared because contemp isn't my very fave genre and I'm scared I'll let everyone down!
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
Do I even need to explain?

And that's my Top Ten.  Let me know yours in the comments! :D

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown
Series: The Coldest Girl In Coldtown, Book One
By: Holly Black
Published: 3rd September 2013
Published By: Indigo
Found: On Goodreads' YA Novels of 2013 Listopia

Synopsis From Goodreads:
Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!  Holly Black = one of my fave authors EVER!  Loveherloveherloveher!! :D

I HAVE A CURSE.
I HAVE A GIFT.

I’M A MONSTER.
I’M MORE THAN HUMAN.

MY TOUCH IS LETHAL.
MY TOUCH IS POWER.

I AM THEIR WEAPON.
I WILL FIGHT BACK.

No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal, but The Reestablishment has plans for her.  Plans to use her as a weapon.  But Juliette has plans of her own.  After a lifetime without freedom, she’s finally discovering a strength to fight back for the very first time – and to find a future with the one boy she thought she’d lost forever.
In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a riveting dystopian world, a thrilling superhero story, and an unforgettable heroine.

                                                                   Review:
'"You can't touch me..."
'Things happen when people touch me.  Strange things.  Bad things.
'Dead things.'
Juliette has been locked up for two-hundred-and-sixty-four days.  264 days of isolation – of nothingness.  Of loneliness.  264 days without contact with another human being.
All because of this curse gift.  This power she has no control over.  This power that made her parents treat  her like a monster and got her locked up here.  Wherever hereis.  All alone.
And then Adam is put in her cell.  Adam, the boy she knows but who does not know her.  Adam, the boy who betrays her.  Adam, the only boy who's made her feel hope.
But there is no hope in this world.  Not now Warner, the soldier, has decided to use her and her power to win a war.  Not now he's gotten it into his head that she could be able to put together the pieces and win it for them.
But after she gets this taste of freedom, after being locked away and falling for seventeen years, she cannot get enough.  For the first time, Juliette wants to fight.  She wants to be free – truly free.  She wants to have the choice to choose and she wants the chance to be with the only boy she's ever loved.
She wants to fight back against this wreck of a world and she wants to win.
She doesn't want to be in a thousand pieces anymore, clinging to the edge of the world and waiting for someone to help her back up...
I bought Shatter Me and got super excited about it.  But before I could read it, I got caught up in Obsidian...  Sigh...  But the moment I'd finished that, I picked this one back up.  I started reading and for the second time in as many books, I was completely entranced.  My God, this writing style.  I might just be in love.  And Juliette... man, break my heart!  I think I'm on a bit of a roll when it comes to finding new faves this week.  I mean, boy, two new books I absolutely heart from one Amazon shopping basket?  Score!  And there's still like four more books for me to sink my teeth into!  I can't wait!  But onto the review...
Juliette – oh God!  She'd had such a horrid life and she was just so, so broken.  And yet at the same time, she was as strong as anyone could be.  And she was just the best person ever.  She was so caring and loving and desperate to be accepted, loved.  She just broke broke broke my heart into pieces over and over and over again because I just loved her so much.
And Adam was the hottest, kindest, loveliest and most amazing thing ever.  I fell in love with him like instantly.  He's so... perfect.  I just fell instantly and hard hard hard because, my God, could he be any more amazing?  He was just… there are no words.  I loved him – I loved loved loved him!
As for Warner, he was, to quote Juliette, totally "possessive".  He was also cruel, manipulative, and cold.  And yet, there was this other side of him – this really vulnerable, damaged side that we didn't get to see all that much.  That extra chapter – a snippet from Destroy Me, written from Warner's POV – let me see more into the mind of Warner and... I think that I might be able to like him if he was all that side.  He was vulnerable and sweet and real... I want to see more of this Warner – don't know if I will, but I can't wait to see more of him anyway.
If you hadn’t gathered, Mafi’s characters were just incredible.  So, so incredible.  They were all just so, so real to me – insanely real and jump-off-the-page.  I WAS Juliette, I LOVEDAdam, I HATED/pitied/FELT Warner.  And all the other characters – don't get me started on little James and Kenji.  Or on Juliette's parents and everyone else in her life – I never met them but I LOATHEDthem all.  I mean, HOW HOW HOWcould they DO that to a little girl who was even more afraid – much much muchmore afraid – and better than they were?!  God, I hate ignorant people – especially the cruel and ignorant...
You see?  You see how strongly I felt about them all?!   That's what Mafi made me do – love or hate with a crazy strong passion.  Ohh, I love it.
This writing style.  I mentioned it earlier, but I simply have to gush about it more.  It is, quite frankly, captivating.  It's so raw and beautiful and lyrical and shocking and incredible.  I absolutely loved loved loved it!  It just sucked me right in and let me really, truly be Juliette.  I felt every single thing she did, saw everything, was everything.  It was stunning – one of a kind writing.  Breath-taking.  Amazing.  Stunning.  Ironically, I don't even have the words.  And you know a book's good when you're hooked from page one.  And Shatter Mejust got more exciting and addictive and action-packed and suspenseful the further through I got.  The plot like – it was just incredible.  I loved learning about the world, the war, the romance, the mystery – both of what Warner wanted and what Juliette and Adam's past was like.  I just loved all of it and I couldn't stop reading til I'd gobbled the book up in one go.
The world – man, I love it.  It was just, well, stunning!  It's very much a devastated place – plants and animals are dying, birds no longer fly, everywhere is poisoned.  An environmentalist's nightmare, so full of famine and violence and loneliness.  A dystopian nightmare.  But there is this whole other side of the world.  There's hope and life and human emotions and girls with kickass curses gifts.  Ohh.  I just can't waitfor more of this world!
Some books...  Some books you just know are magic.  From the very first page, the book is unique and amazing and stunningly refreshingly irresistibly different and new and just, well, amazing!  I can barely find the words to tell you how much I absolutely adored Shatter Me.  How absolutely stark raving DESPERATE I am for the next in the series.  I know I'm insanely behind in my discovery of Shatter Me, but it is now one of my favourite books of 2013.  It is just so amazing it's beyond description.  So please. If you haven't read this yet, please please please do.  I want everyone to experience the pure, for lack of a better word, ecstasy that is Shatter Me.  So pick it up.  Please.  For me?  You so won't regret it.

The Chaos of Stars
By: Kiersten White

Published By: HarperTeen
Found: On Goodreads' YA Novels of 2013 Listopia

Synopsis From Goodreads:
Isadora’s family is seriously screwed up.
Of course, as the human daughter of Egyptian gods, that pretty much comes with the territory. She’s also stuck with parents who barely notice her, and a house full of relatives who can’t be bothered to remember her name. After all, they are going to be around forever—and she’s a mere mortal.
Isadora’s sick of living a life where she’s only worthy of a passing glance, and when she has the chance to move to San Diego with her brother, she jumps on it. But Isadora’s quickly finding that a “normal” life comes with plenty of its own epic complications—and that there’s no such thing as a clean break when it comes to family. Much as she wants to leave her past behind, she can’t shake the ominous dreams that foretell destruction for her entire family. When it turns out there may be truth in her nightmares, Isadora has to decide whether she can abandon her divine heritage after all.
Kiersten White is AWESOME and I can't WAIT for this!!!  I love Egyptian gods - they're my second fave after Greek!! :D

A fearless Roman gladiator
A reckless twenty-first-century girl
A mysterious virus unites them…

AD 152
Sethos Leontis, a skilled and mesmerizing fighter, is unexpectedly wounded and lies dangerously close to death.

AD 2012
Eva is brilliant – but troubled.  Starting her new life at a school for the gifted, a single moment in the lab has terrifying results.

An extraordinary link brings Sethos and Eva together, but it could force them apart – because the fever that grips them cannot be cured, and falling in love could be lethal…

Can love survive when worlds collide and time itself is threatened?

                                                                   Review:
“I had just reviewed my life to date, and it was a pitiful catalogue of failure.  I had managed to make a complete mess of everything.  I was a criminal.  I had failed at school - twice.  I had failed to make a single friend.  I had even failed to be loved by my own mother: quite an achievement.
Nobody really wanted me around.”
Eva is smart.  As in, off-the-scales smart.  So smart she's been kicked out of two schools.  On purpose. She couldn't handle the mundaneness of it all.
But now... now she's terrified she's ruined her life forever.  I mean, what kind of future is there for a teenage hacker who has been expelled twice and has a criminal record?  That's why she jumps at the chance to attend St. Magdalene's Boarding School for the gifted.  It's a place where she can fit in, where she won't need to resort to insane measures to escape the boredom.
It's also there where a freak lab accident leaves her wrapped up in a mystery she is desperate to solve - a mystery that could have disastrous and dangerous results...
“Sethos Leontis's hopes were limited.  Although some irrepressible part of him hoped to live to see another day, he knew he had little control over his destiny.  A gladiator lived and died by the will of others.”
Seth is a gladiator, a retiarius – has been since he was taken as a slave and forced to fight.  He hates it, even though he's a phenomenal fighter – unbeatable.  Formidable.  No one can touch him – no one can get close.
Well, until he's left seriously wounded and close to death.  His fever burns stronger and stronger until...
Somehow, against all the odds and rules of physics, the two of them meet, bond, fall in love.  But the link is as powerful as it is weak, as breakable as it is unshakeable...
I bought Fever either with birthday or Christmas money... I can't really remember.  Either way, it's taken me forever to get round to reading it, especially when the premise is so freaking awesome it blows your mind.  I mean, how cool?!  You cannot read that synopsis and not think: Whoa!  Well, I can't anyway.  I mean, it intrigued me: how the hey can it work, a gladiator and a twenty-first century girl?  I was desperate to read and find out.  And man it didn't let me down!  I had my socks blown off by this book - it was so addictive and just so much fun!  I stormed through it, loving every second.
Eva... Now, I will admit that her damned near perfection was a bit off putting, but how can you not love a girl who used her mum's credit card to order sweets, fizzy drinks, kittens and a puppy online when they're six and is a master hacker by the age of eight?  And I loved Eva's geeky side – all the nerdy bookish stuff.  I really liked her: she was shy and socially awkward, had family issues and was super-duper brainy.   But I just loved Seth instantly– he was so brave and strong and smart.  I loved his fierceness, his determination and stubbornness.  He was just so... yum.  How can you not love a guy with a fierce gladiator outer-shell and a yummy, sweet, sensitive chocolate centre?  You can't; especially not when his name is Sethos Leontis.
I really loved the supporting cast, and how they all managed to completely shock me.   I especially loved Eva's friend Astrid – she was just brilliant and totally cracked me up!
I must say, I wasn't overly keen on the romantic relationships in this book.  They seemed kind of rushed to me.  It was like: 'Oh, I've just met you and know nothing about you but you are beautiful and I love you and I will die for you.'  Instalove.  Hello, my old foe.  I did, however, love the ideas behind the romances, especially the genius gladiator-modern-girl twist.  And I'll admit, it wasn't even really the romance between Eva and Seth that bugged me – it kinda made sense, given the former romance; AKA the one that irritated me.  Maybe in the next book more revelations or growth will take away that niggle.  But the friendships... Totally different kettle of fish.  The bond between Seth and Matt – so real and so sweet.  The two of them were just like brothers.  As for the whole friendship-fallout of Eva's... Well, it was completely believable.  We all know how bitchy and cruel teen girls can be.  Heck, my best friend of six years turned suddenly on my one day for no reason.  Which, of course, made me hate Eva's so-called 'friend' all the more: Eva didn't deserve it in the slightest and she's just so... innocent and vulnerable, you know?
But, happy dance: split POVs!  I really loved that.  We got Eva's 2012 narrative in first person, letting us get into her head and be freakishly smart for a while.  And then we got into Seth's and sometimes even Matt's brains in third person, giving us an awesome insight into life in Londinium – Roman London – and the gladiator life... plus... something else too...
Sorry for being all mysterious but I don't wanna give anything away...  Anyways, I absolutely loved the writing and the way we got so many different perspectives.  Plus, I just thought that Shulman had a great writing style and loved how she handled all these different times and settings.
And now we get to the plot...  Oh.  My.  God.  I really loved it!  It was so exciting!  I can't say much because otherwise I'll give everything away, but I loved it.  It was so totally hooking and unexpected and different – and just so much fun!  I loved racing to find the answers and am absolutely desperate for Delirium!  I need more!
Plus, I just loved the settings – both current and historical.  I sobadly want to go to St Mag's: it sounds amazing and I am desperate for that library!  And the Ancient Rome/gladiator world?  Just as awesome!  So flipping awesome!  And don't even get me started on... well, let's call it X.  X was just too cool and too super-duper-top-secret for me to talk to you about.  Heehee.  I love being evil.
Fever was so much fun and so much more complex than I thought it'd be.  All the genres and ideas just slotted together so perfectly. It wasn't perfect and the instalove did bug me, but it didn't matter because I really enjoyed the whole thing.  Fever was just so freaking addictive – at times I was wondering whether I was the infected, the feverish need I had to just read read read and find all the answers!  I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on Delirium – and recommend this to all of you who love time travel, Doctor Who ,romance, sci-fi, historical times and...  Ok, maybe I'll just recommend it to everyone looking for a fun read.  That seems easier.
Now.  When's Delirium out?

Ok, since On My Wishlist has gone now, I've decided to do my own version.  It shall be called The Book Addicted Girl Wishes For...  The picture below is a super quick edit; I'll make a better one later!  :D

Anyways, this week I am wishin' for...

The Lost Sun
Series: The United States of Asgard, Book One
By: Tessa Gratton
Published: 25th June 2013
Published By: RandomHouse
Found: On Goodreads' YA Novels of 2013 Listopia

Synopsis From Goodreads:
Fans of Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Holly Black's The Curse Workers will embrace this richly drawn, Norse-mythology-infused alternate world: the United States of Asgard.
Seventeen-year-old Soren Bearskin is trying to escape the past. His father, a famed warrior, lost himself to the battle-frenzy and killed thirteen innocent people. Soren cannot deny that berserking is in his blood--the fevers, insomnia, and occasional feelings of uncontrollable rage haunt him. So he tries to remain calm and detached from everyone at Sanctus Sigurd's Academy. But that's hard to do when a popular, beautiful girl like Astrid Glyn tells Soren she dreams of him. That's not all Astrid dreams of--the daughter of a renowned prophetess, Astrid is coming into her own inherited abilities.
When Baldur, son of Odin and one of the most popular gods in the country, goes missing, Astrid sees where he is and convinces Soren to join her on a road trip that will take them to find not only a lost god, but also who they are beyond the legacy of their parents and everything they've been told they have to be.
Ok, call me a nerd but after the Marvel movie Thor I have kinda had an obsession with Norse mythology.  But I never seem to be able to find any Norse-inspired books.  And now... YESSS!!!  Not only is it Norse-inspired, but it is also recommended for readers of two of my favourite authors as well as written by one of my favourite authors!  All of this = YAY!!!!!!!  *happy dance*  Can't wait! :D

Well, that's my wish.  What are you wishing for today? :D

Top Ten Tuesday (#3)

Hello, lovely followers! I've decided to join in with all the fun of Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the awesome The Broke and the Bookish. It just looks like so much fun! :D

This week the topic is:

Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

And so this is my ten...

She is my favourite author ever - literally.  She is funny, witty,  clever, genius, writes the funniest, most action packed and sexiest scenes ever!  I love her!  And she just doesn't get the recognition she deserves.  Even if all us bloggers know and love her, other non-bloggy people don't and that's just a crime.  She should have billboards, posters, movies, and Daemon Black cardboard cutouts...
Wait, forget that last one...

I love Gregg's Empty Coffin Series - it's awesome!  But no one really seems to know about it - and I really wish they could, because it's amazing!  So different!  A bit like Medium for teens, but even better!!

Yes, Sarah is huge.  She has a huge following.  So why bring her up?  Because the publishers (the fools) only published the first in her Fated series, which is easily one of my fave series!   How could they have done that?!?!?  Also, I just really want one of her books to be a movie.  They would make the most kickass movies...

Julia is a brilliant British author and all her contemps are so amazing.  I really wish she got more recognition!!

Yep, ol' Julia has three pennames.  And each penname writes equally amazing books.  And each penname should get much more recognition.  I love you, Julia/Joss/Eve!

I loved Sam's The Repossession and really wish more people would read it!!

Best. Series. Ever.  And Everyone. Should. Read. It.
Everyone.
Everywhere.
And Will should have movies too.  Lots of them.  One for each book.  Hint hint, movie world.

E.J. is amazing.  I love her to pieces.  And she should have one of the huge publishers pushing her books, because all teen girls would love to read them!  They're so funny!!  And she's so lovely!

This is a weird choice, 'cause Holly is really well known.  But... she should have a Curse Workers movie!!!  Ok!  That's why!  I'm selfish and want a White Cat movie!  Sue me.

Maria's really well known.  But not well known enough in my opinion.  She could never be well known enough.

Well, that's my Ten!!  You probably know them all, but fingers crossed! :D
Oh, and FYI, like four of these authors are taking part in Fortnight of Guests...
Can you guess who?

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Series: Between, Book One
By: April Genevieve Tucholke
Published: 15th August 2013
Published By: DialBooks
Found: On Goodreads' YA Novels of 2013 Listopia

Synopsis From Goodreads:

You stop fearing the devil when you’re holding his hand…
Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town…until River West comes along. River rents the guesthouse behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard. Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more? Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery...who makes you want to kiss back. Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.
Blending faded decadence and the thrilling dread of gothic horror, April Genevieve Tucholke weaves a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance, as gorgeously told as it is terrifying—a debut to watch.

Totally creepily awesome cover - 100% in love with it!  And I am so in love with the creepy Gothic era - can't wait to read it! :D

Well, that's what I'm waiting for today!  What are you waiting for? :D
